Man charged with 11 offences after NSW Police blitz on street racing
A single-day blitz targeting street racing and illegally-modified vehicles has resulted in multiple charges laid and a raft of vehicle defect notices issued in the state’s south.
A man has been charged with multiple offences – with more than 24 defect notices issued for his car – during an illegal vehicle blitz by New South Wales Police which saw almost half of all vehicles inspected immediately taken off the road.
On Sunday 18 August the single-day Operation Dissident conducted in the state’s southern areas of Wollongong and Lake Illawarra targeted street racing and illegally modified vehicles and included the arrest of a man in King Street, Thirroul.
The 20-year-old was charged with 11 offences – including resisting arrest, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, as well as displaying an unauthorised number plate on his Volkswagen Golf.
He was also charged with carrying a weapon.
The alleged offender was among 12 drivers issued with major vehicle ‘grounding’ defect notices – taking them off the road immediately – after 26 vehicles were inspected, with each driver drug and breath tested.
It resulted in two drink driving charges and four drivers failing drugs tests.
NSW Police also reported 13 vehicles avoided the blitz’s inspection site at Bulli when called up, and as a result have been referred to Transport for NSW inspectors for further action.
NSW Police have also recently warned drivers to remember to keep left unless overtaking on dual-carriageway and multiple lane roads after a post on social media.
In April 2024, NSW Police defected a vehicle after its 76-year-old driver had illegally installed racing harnesses.
